Game Recap

The Verona Wildcats hosted 7th ranked Madison West Thursday. This game proved to be another example of the tough Big Eight Conference that both of these teams reside in. The Wildcats started strong with a slotted ball from Andres Temozihui to the feet of Eliot Popkewitz to finish near corner in the 4th minute! Play continued for both teams in a good match, when Bryan Lopez Martinez found space to cut into the middle of the field from the left and about 30 yards out places a line drive just under the cross bar to put Verona up 2-0 in the 16th minute, which remained the score for halftime. Verona knew that Madison West wouldn’t be satisfied and be more aggressive in the second half. That aggressiveness was shown and put the Wildcats without possession for long stretches in the second half. In the 67th and 81st minutes West netted a goal, which tied the game with less than 9min remaining. This woke the Cats up and they fought like they had everything to lose. In the 88th minute Eliot Popkewitz finds Jack Bates on a thru ball where Jack takes a needed settling touch, but placed the ball, left, passed West’s keeper for the winning goal. Verona is now 9-2 overall and 4-0 in conference. Putting them in 1st place tied with Madison East in the Big Eight.
